Rules & Dark-Sky Etiquette
A few simple rules protect everyone's night vision, equipment and observing time.
After Sunset: Red Lights Only
White lights are prohibited on the observing field after sunset. Use dim red lights and avoid shining headlamps directly toward other attendees.
Vehicle Lights & Movement
By default, vehicles remain parked after twilight. Please prevent automatic headlights from illuminating the field. If you must arrive or depart after twilight, notify ECSP staff via Discord and coordinate with fellow attendees for a red-light escort. Staff can facilitate exceptions and emergencies.
Green Lasers
Green lasers may be used during the Friday public observing program only. They are prohibited at other times to protect observers and astrophotographers.
Astrophotography Screens
As astrophotography has evolved to a state that is viewable on smartphones and tablets, we ask for extra care and consideration for the night vision of traditional visual astronomers. An unshielded tablet screen can take as much of a toll on your dark adjustment as a brief headlight flash. Dim and shield screens, use red/night modes where practical, and orient displays away from neighboring observers.
Generators
Generators are permitted during daylight only and must be off at night.
Fires, Smoking, Pets & Park Rules
No ground or charcoal fires are permitted on the observing field because smoke can damage optical equipment. Smoking and vaping follow Virginia State Parks rules. Pets are allowed under normal park rules but must remain controlled and must not disturb people or equipment. Please clean up after them promptly.
Trash & Courtesy
Keep the field clean and use the designated trash/recycling arrangements. Setup is first-come, first-served; be considerate of neighboring observers and avoid unnecessary light or activity that interferes with observing.
Virginia State Parks rules also apply.
