Observing Field & Camping

On the Observing Field

Registered observers may camp near their telescope equipment on the observing field. There are no campsite-style water or electrical hookups at individual field sites.

Vehicles after twilight

By default, vehicles should not move on the observing field after twilight. If an exception is necessary or there is an emergency, coordinate with ECSP staff. Please notify us via Discord and coordinate with fellow attendees for a red-light escort for arrivals or departures after twilight. If you know you will need to leave during the night, use the parking area near the Mansion rather than parking beside your observing setup.

Trailers and RVs

Small utility/teardrop trailers 14 feet and under may be permitted on the observing field. Larger RVs, motorhomes and camping trailers should use the Chippokes campground. Ground conditions and park direction always take precedence.

Charging & water

Two 20-amp electrical power stations with four GFCI outlets each are available near the barn/registration area for charging astronomy equipment on a first-come, first-served basis. Potable water is available in the same area. There is no Wi-Fi in the park.

Generators

Generators are permitted during daylight only. They may not run at night.

Restrooms & showers

Two port-a-potties and a water closet in the tractor barn are available on the field. A full restroom is near the Mansion. Bathhouses with showers are available in the main campgrounds.

Field Map

The existing ECSP field map remains the working layout for 2026. Use it to understand the observing area, registration/barn area, parking and trailer restrictions.

Park Campground & Cabins

Chippokes campground and cabins are separate from ECSP registration. The campground offers water/electric sites and bathhouses. Use Virginia State Parks for current availability, rates and reservations rather than relying on copied prices.
